The first NHP to be raised by the primate research center is cynomolgus macaque because of its lack of breeding season which made them suitable for research of reproductive system and infectious diseases. Additionally, cynomolgus macaques are common in Thailand and thus appropriate for domestication and production as laboratory animals in health sciences. Macaques with known origins, clear genetic traits and specific-pathogen-free (SPF) are now in great demands for drug testing and research. Thailand has a great potential in production of macaques with quality health and genetics to the world’s demand.
